Ludwig Mies van der Rohe March 27 1886 – August 17 1969

"Less is More" - Mies van der Rohe

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, commonly known as Mies, was a German-American architect who was known as one of the modern day architecture pioneers alongside with Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius.

Much like the designers in the classical, neoclassical, and gothic eras, Mies had created a style which suited his era, the modern day era, and used modern day materials to justify the style. Mies, sought for superior clarity and detail by using minimal framework in his designs, which he named "Skin and bones architecture".

I M Pei

The person that I have decided to research is not a furniture designer but rather an architect by the name of I.M. Pei., he went to M.I.T wanted to study engineer, but was convinced to study architecture. His role model and influence came from Frank Lloyd Wright. Some of his notable and recognizable works are The Louvres glass pyramid and the spiral staircase, Bank of China (in Hong Kong) and the John F. Kennedy Library. I find I.M. Peis work to be amazing and awe inspiring, his works are all very geometrical, clean cut and although it looks very minimal in the design aspects its elegant yet sturdy. Peis style has been described as modernist with a cubist twist. Besides the obvious geometric shape usage in his designs I also noticed that he also likes to work with glass, He does not really explain why he uses the materials he uses, but it did mention that he likes to find balance in his works, which i think he does. Most if not all does not look too bare or too excessive.

Greg’s Orrery

From: Greg

Website: nolemonsnomelon.wordpress.com

Location: Broken Arrow, OK

Hobbyist or Pro: Hobbyist

Experience: 10+ yrs

Project Name: Orrery

Wood Species: Pine, Baltic Birch Ply

Finish Used: Spit coat of shellac followed by gloss Minwax wipe-on poly.

Project Description:
This may not qualify since I did some of it on a CNC router but it was certainly a fun project. I documented the build at my website.

This is called an orrery; it’s a mechanical model of the solar system. You turn the crank and the planets go around the sun realistically. That is, mercury goes around pretty fast, Saturn creeps along on the outside, etc. It’s really fun to turn the crank and watch everything work. It’s kind of mesmerizing. Each planet is attached to its gear below with a brass tube and these tubes are all concentric.

I made the gears using my friend’s CNC router. I had to design all the gears in CAD and then take them to his machine where we had to make a few more adjustments. These were made with a 1/8¨ router bit. The machine itself is made by ShopBot and uses a Porter Cable variable speed router (I forget – the big one they sell). I did the largest gear by hand on the bandsaw just to convince myself that CNC was a smarter idea. It wasn’t faster though (although if I were to make a second one, it would go much faster.)

You can see a video of the Orrery in action!

Start Up Woodworker

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dieter_W_Hoffmann]Dieter W Hoffmann
Woodworking magazines provide excellent ideas for woodworkers but sometimes the projects are far above the ability of the beginner. Beautiful cabinets with elaborate marquetry may pose a challenge to the expert carpenter/woodworker, but for the guy starting off, it is far beyond his ability and experience.
What is in it for a Beginner
This article is too short to make an expert out of a beginner but it tries to show what simple projects can be attempted. Plans cannot be given here as they are available elsewhere, but I will give an idea of the process that is followed when making something. It is not intended to give detailed instructions, just to give an idea of what is involved in creating a project. Using a typical project, the process is illustrated.
The Process of Creating a Project
Lets assume you want to make a table. The process is the same whether a coffee table or a kitchen table is made, so lets make a coffee table. Choose a size: make it 4 ft x 2 ft and 16 inches high. Now choose the wood. For a beginner, choose something that is not expensive and that can be stained to look like a more expensive type of wood.
The top can be made out of a piece of board or plywood with the same type of wood or veneer that will be used for the other parts. To hide the edges a border can be cut from say a 2 inches x 1 inches of wood. The edge can be routed in a nice pattern to make it look better. Where the edges meet, a miter needs to be cut. It is perhaps easier to make this frame first and cut the board to fit exactly inside.
For a coffee table the legs need to be looking a bit more elaborate than a normal kitchen table. If you dont have a lathe to turn the legs, they can be cut square with a taper toward the feet. If you have a router, you can rout some edges or a stripe into the legs to make them look more fancy, just dont overdo it.
The side and end rails can be straight or have a curved bottom, if you have a jig saw or a band saw the bottom edges can then being routed to a nice edge. If the table size is, as mentioned above, the table top needs to overhang by about 2 inches all round. That means the lengthwise rails have to be cut to 4 ft less 2x2 inches less 2x the thickness of the legs. The same for the end rails but now the width is less.
Alternatively if it should be a modern design, the legs can be straight down and be flush with the table top.
For simplicity the legs and the rails can be joined up with dowels. Three dowels per joint with dowels not less than 3/8 inch. The drilling is tricky if you do not have a drill press. The holes need to be exactly 90 degrees to the face of the joint. You can buy little marker plugs with your dowels.
First drill the holes in the rails, held in a vice and clearly marked. Hold the drill exactly 90 degrees to the face being drilled. When this is done place the marker plugs into the holes. Place the leg where it must go and tap with a hammer. Thus the holes that need to be drilled in the legs, are marked exactly where they must be drilled, then drill them to the right depth.
For the next step you will need clamps. Glue the dowels and the face of the rails and press into the legs. If you only have two clamps, clamp the sides first and when the glue has set, assemble the frame with the same procedure as described.
The table top can also be fitted with dowels to the rails. Just be careful not to drill through the table top and ruin it. Use a depth gauge on your drill. Now the job is finished except for the staining and/ or varnishing and there you have it! You have created a coffee table.

George Nakashima Work Ethic and Inspiration

Thinking about the work of George Nakashima, I too was expecting to see a more oriental design quality.  However, after visiting his website I became intrigued not so much by the actual design of the furniture, but more so for his teams work ethic and inspiration.  That is what I most appreciate.  Never would I have thought woodworking can be such an intimate process between man and nature.  It is fascinating to realize the process of woodworking (particularly by Nakashima) as a bond and destiny of a single tree.  Its inspiring to see the levels of dedication and perfection given towards a single tree.  I tend to run into perfectionism as a stressful and problematic issue, but after researching the works of Nakashima, perfection in woodworking seems like a pleasant requirement.  Although I personally dont particularly like the design of Nakashimas work, I honestly do appreciate the background story behind the work.  I enjoy the ideals of concept, perfection, and art.

2000 Page Views

Wow 2000 page views - another 1000 in just over a month!

Now I feel really guilty due to my lack of posts over the past few weeks. So whats been happening? ...
Not a lot on the wood working front to be honest. I have been spending my time doing a little DIY around the house, building the raised beds and getting the garden ready for Spring. Lots of digging, collecting of manure and compost preparation etc.
I

The new Timber has been stored away in the garden shed as its a bit wet, not tree wet, but rain wet. It was soaked on the day of delivery, probably due to being stored outdoors at the wood yard, so Im giving it time to dry out a bit. This could take some time with our damp weather over here in the UK, once Spring arrives and the sun starts to heat things up a bit Im sure things will improve.

I did bring a board or two straight indoors to see how they might handle being dried faster due to our central heating. I had rough cut a 6ft board into three 2ft pieces for the beginnings of a project once it had dried enough. However, this resulted in deep cracks appearing predictably in the centre of what would be the core of the tree trunk.

I ripped out the cracked 2" wide centre from each 2ft length resulting in the following wastage.

After some planing I now have saved the following good outer pieces. Even with such wastage, the wood still costs a lot less than buying it straight from my normal wood yard. I will continue to keep an eye on these smaller pieces and put them to good use in the near future.

Anyway, more of a catch up post really, wood working will resume shortly I promise...

Build a Vintage Ladder

Ive been having a serious love affair with vintage ladders lately but we have been having difficulty finding one that isnt expensive. So whats a girl to do?  Build one!  It cost less than $10 to make this, which makes a lot more sense to me.  Heres what you need....
Two 1 1/4 inch dowels and two 1 x 3s 6 feet in length from your local building center.
With a miter saw, cut each dowel into 3 pieces giving you 6 equal pieces.  They should each be 16 inches long.  You will only need 5 of these.
Measure how far from the end you would like your dowel to be and mark it. Mine was approximately 8 inches. Place your dowel on your mark, making sure its centered on the wood and trace it with a pencil. This is where you will drill your hole.
Using a drill with a 1 1/4 inch saw drill bit, drill your hole, making sure to not go through the wood on the other side, like I did. No worries if you do, wood filler will fix it up. This is what it will look like.
Repeat this process at the other end of your board. Then measure the distance between the two holes and divide by two to get the center measurement for the center hole. Drill that hole. Then measure the distance between your end hole and center hole and divide by two again to get your two remaining hole placement measurements. You just want to make sure there is an even amount of space between each dowel. Repeat this step with your other board. It helps to line up all your dowels and trace with a pencil to make sure everything lines up BEFORE drilling into the wood. Next, apply wood glue into each hole and then insert the dowel. Repeat with remaining dowels. Then attach the other board to the top. This part is definitely a two person job. Hubby was giving me a hand. :)
Now, obviously this ladder is NOT going to be used as a ladder.  But to make sure it was stable and didnt come apart, we drilled 1 1/2 inch screws through the outside of the board where each dowel was inserted. Sink the screws into the wood and then fill the holes with wood putty.  After your wood putty dries, go over it with fine sandpaper to give it a smooth finish.  Looks like a ladder, right?! To give it a "vintage" look, I first took my palm sander and sanded down the edges and ends to soften them up and create a rounded, worn down look.
Then grab a can of Minwax special walnut stain and slather on a thick layer of it, let it absorb for 15 minutes or so and then wipe off excess with an old rag. Youre done for the day as this needs to dry overnight. Go relax with a glass of cold lemonade in a pretty glass and a good movie with someone you love.
After 24 hours, grab some white paint and paint one coat over the stain. Again, this needs to dry for several hours.
After the paint has dried thoroughly, take your palm sander, or a piece of medium to fine grit sandpaper and start sanding off the white paint in areas where there would be normal wear. You want to sand down to the stain so you will be removing a lot of the white paint in some areas.
When it looks good and distressed, take a piece of extra fine sandpaper or steel wool and smooth out the surface. Remove dust with a tack cloth and your done!
A vintage ladder for less than $10 instead of the $30+ Ive seen them sell for. It doesnt bother me that it isnt really vintage, it was the "look" I was after.
These ladders are so charming and are perfect for holding fluffy white towels, favorite magazines or anything else that makes you happy. I made this for our master bath which is the next room currently getting a redo. Pics of that coming this week. Ive got a couple of other fun projects lined out for that room so stay tuned. I hope this tutorial was helpful if anyone would like to make a faux vintage ladder! Have a happy day!  Linking up with The Lettered Cottage and Stay At Home Nation this week!
